The Next Jordan — Before His Knees Said No
Anfernee 'Penny' Hardaway was the most gifted 1-2-3 guard of the mid-1990s — a 6'7" point guard who
could score, pass, and defend. Nike built a commercial empire around him (the Lil' Penny puppet). The
Magic built a championship contender around him. Then his knee gave out. Repeated surgeries stole his
athleticism. He played 14 seasons but his prime lasted approximately 4 years. What he showed in those 4
years — alongside Shaq, against Jordan's Bulls — was something that had never been seen at his position.
The Jordan Connection: Hardaway's Magic eliminated Jordan's comeback Bulls in 1995 — the most significant
series of the entire comeback. Jordan in #45, Penny with Shaq, in what might have been a preview of the next
decade's dominance if Hardaway's knees had held.
