When Jordan scored 50 against the Denver Nuggets, it was another example of his ability
to elevate beyond what anyone thought was possible. The 58% shooting efficiency on that
volume of attempts is what separated him from every other scorer in history.

The 5'11" Point Guard Who Ran The Team That Beat Jordan's Last Rivals
Avery Johnson was the point guard of the 1999 San Antonio Spurs championship team — the first
championship in the post-Jordan era. At 5'11" with boundless energy, he was the floor general who ran the
offense that David Robinson and Tim Duncan finished. He averaged 17+ points and 9 assists in his best
seasons. His 1999 championship is the first proof that the Eastern Conference's stranglehold on
championships, which Jordan had created, was over.
The Jordan Connection: Johnson's Spurs won the 1999 championship in the lockout-shortened season — the
only full year between Jordan's second and third retirements. It's the championship that filled the gap Jordan
left. Johnson's competitive fire and relentlessness is the most Jordan-like quality of any player from his size
class.
