When Jordan scored 50 against the Boston Celtics, it was another example of his ability to
elevate beyond what anyone thought was possible. The 59% shooting efficiency on that
volume of attempts is what separated him from every other scorer in history.

The 1988 #1 Overall Pick Whose Career Was Stolen By Injuries
Danny Manning was the consensus best player in the 1988 draft — a 6'10" small forward who could do
everything. He tore his ACL in his rookie season and never fully recovered to the ceiling that scouts had
projected. He played 15 seasons, averaged 14 points per game, won a championship with Phoenix in 1994
(while Jordan was retired), and was consistently good. But the injuries meant we never saw the player he
was supposed to be. His Clippers career — before the injuries — showed something special.
The Jordan Connection: Manning's 1988 draft was the draft that also produced Mitch Richmond, Rod
Strickland, and Mark Jackson. The class that was supposed to challenge Jordan's era produced solid
contributors but no single player who could match him. Manning at full health might have been the closest.
