Career Playoff PPG — Jordan vs All-Time Greats

MICHAEL JORDAN LEBRON JAMES KOBE BRYANT

Jordan averaged 33.4 points per game in the playoffs — higher than his regular season average of 30.1.

He was better in the playoffs. Not slightly better. 3.3 points per game better. Against tougher competition.

In higher-pressure situations. With more preparation from opponents. The conventional wisdom is that the

playoffs are harder — defenses tighten, rotations shorten, scouting intensifies. Jordan's response to all of

that was to score more. 33.4 PPG across 179 playoff games. The bigger the moment, the higher the

number.

PEAK EFFICIENCY IN THE FINAL SEASON

December 27, 1997. Jordan's final full season. He scored 47 points on 18-of-26 shooting — 69% from the

field — against Atlanta. Perfect from the free throw line: 11-of-11. This was the 1997-98 season that would

end with The Last Shot. Jordan was 34 years old, in his 13th NBA season, and still shooting 69% in individual

games. The efficiency at that age, at that volume, in that competitive context, has no historical parallel.

The gap between Jordan's 33.4 career playoff average and the next closest player is more than 4 points per

game. That's not a record that's in danger. It's a record that requires a player to average more points per game

in the playoffs than Jordan averaged in the regular season — which was already the highest career average in

NBA history. The record isn't unbreakable because it's high. It's unbreakable because it was sustained across

179 games.

THE INVERSION

His Playoff Average Was Higher Than His

Regular Season Average.

Most elite scorers see their playoff averages drop — tighter defense, better scouting,

shorter rotations. Jordan's went up. From 30.1 in the regular season to 33.4 in the playoffs,

a 3.3-point increase. This means that against the best teams, in the highest-pressure

situations, with the most at stake, Jordan scored more. Not the same. More. The inversion

is the most telling statistic about his competitive nature.

NEW YORK KNICKS / CHARLOTTE HORNETS · 1988–2003

KNICKS ALL-STAR 1995 · ONE OF THE ERA'S BEST DEFENSIVE FORWARDS

The Most Physically Intimidating Player Jordan Regularly Faced

Anthony Mason was one of the most physically intimidating players in NBA history — the cornerstone of Pat

Riley's enforcer Knicks teams that were specifically built to punish Jordan. He made one All-Star team but

was an impact player for far longer. The haircut artwork. The aggressive defense. The ability to guard

multiple positions. He was the Knicks' enforcer in the same way Rodman was the Bulls' — doing physical

work that doesn't show in box scores.

The Jordan Connection: Mason's Knicks teams made Jordan's playoff runs through New York the most

physically challenging series of his career. The combination of Oakley, Mason, Ewing, and Harper in the

Knicks' frontcourt was the most punishing defensive unit Jordan faced outside of Detroit.
