Trout accumulated a career WAR of 85.2 through his age-30 season — the highest of any player through
that age in baseball history, passing Mickey Mantle. He won 3 MVP awards and finished second 6 other
times in 12 seasons. He has never played in a World Series. His knee and calf have cost him 3 full seasons
since 2021.

Trout's 2012 season at age 20 is one of the most remarkable rookie seasons in baseball history: .326 BA, 30
HR, 49 SB, 129 R, 10.4 WAR. He finished second in MVP voting to Miguel Cabrera's Triple Crown season —
the only real argument for anyone else winning MVP that year was the Triple Crown's historical prestige. By
any metric that accounts for defense and baserunning, Trout had the better season.

The honest answer: there is no second option in Trout's generation. His WAR total through age 29 is the
highest in baseball history. The debate about his legacy is whether injuries have cost him the all-time
conversation. Without them, his trajectory pointed at Mays-level career WAR.

With Three MVPs.
Trout has played 13 seasons and appeared in exactly one ALDS (2014), which the Angels lost in
5 games. He has won 3 MVP awards, finished second 6 other times, and has never won a
playoff series. The 2014 ALDS is the only postseason he has ever appeared in. The Angels have
surrounded him with average-to-mediocre teams for most of his career. Baseball owes him a
postseason run.
Winning is what it's about. I haven't been able to do that yet.

Underrated.
Chase Utley hit .275 with 259 HR across 16 seasons — the most complete second baseman of his era by any
advanced metric. He played in 5 World Series (won 1 in 2008) and was a Gold Glove-caliber defender. He's
on no Hall of Fame list and rarely discussed. His offensive numbers from second base are historically elite.
THE CONNECTION:
Trout played in the same era as Utley's career twilight. Utley was the best second baseman of the
2000s-2010s. Both their legacies are defined by their team context — Utley on a dynasty, Trout on a
franchise that keeps failing him.
COMING NEXT MONDAY
Next Monday: Clayton Kershaw has a career 2.48 ERA and has never been the best pitcher of his era for a
single full season in October.
