THE SEASON MLB NEVER GOT TO SEE
In 1943 Gibson hit an estimated 69+ HR with a .517 batting average for the Homestead Grays. Records were
incomplete because mainstream sports media ignored the Negro Leagues entirely. Every scout, player, and
manager who saw Gibson described him the same way: the hardest-hitting catcher they ever saw. Walter
Johnson — who had faced Ruth — said Gibson would be worth $200,000 in the majors. Gibson wanted one
at-bat against major league pitching. He never got it.

Even with a conservative 20% adjustment for the quality of Negro Leagues competition, Gibson projects to a

Everything
Gibson died of a stroke at 35 years old. Jackie Robinson debuted April 15, 1947 — 85 days later.
Gibson had spent his entire career asking for a major league opportunity and being denied. The
door opened too late. He never knew it was coming.
I only wanted to play in the major leagues.

Gibson's First Baseman For 17 Years. HOF 1972. Completely Forgotten.
Buck Leonard played first base alongside Gibson on the Homestead Grays for 17 years — the team that won
9 consecutive Negro National League pennants from 1937-1945. He hit .320+ career and was inducted to
the HOF in 1972, same year as Gibson. He is mentioned approximately never.
THE CONNECTION:
Leonard and Gibson were the Gehrig-Ruth of the Negro Leagues. Gibson became a legend. Leonard
became a trivia question.
COMING NEXT MONDAY
Next Monday: Ernie Banks hit 512 HR and never played a single postseason game in 19 seasons. 'Let's play two.'
