Paraguay Shocks Germany In Shootout

Paraguay Removes Germany

Paraguay turned Monday's World Cup slate into the kind of night that forces the rest of the bracket to recalibrate. ESPN's event summary had Paraguay and Germany level at 1 to 1 after the match, then Paraguay won penalties 4 to 3. The recap credited Jose Canale with the first sudden death penalty kick and Orlando Gill with two key saves in the shootout. ESPN called it the biggest upset of the 2026 World Cup so far, and the scoreboard backed up the scale of it: Germany is out, Paraguay is into the last 16.

Germany owned the ball and still lost the result that mattered. ESPN's box score showed Germany with 75.6 percent possession, 21 shots and 6 on target. Paraguay had 24.4 percent possession, 7 shots and 3 on target. That gap is exactly why the result reads louder than an ordinary penalty exit. Germany generated volume, Paraguay kept the match within reach, and the shootout turned the entire night around one save at a time.

The morning news cycle stayed on Germany as much as Paraguay. ESPN's FIFA World Cup feed led with Paraguay television cutting out during penalties, Jurgen Klopp criticizing the VAR decision that ruled out a Germany goal in extra time, and Klopp saying it was the wrong moment to discuss Germany links after the exit. That is the real residue of the match. Paraguay has the advancement. Germany has the autopsy.

Brazil And Morocco Advance

Brazil also survived pressure, beating Japan 2 to 1 in the round of 32. ESPN's event article said Gabriel Martinelli scored the winner in the 96th minute. The team stats were lopsided there as well: Brazil had 68.6 percent possession, 19 shots and 7 on target, while Japan had 31.4 percent possession, 5 shots and 2 on target. Brazil won, but the source data says Japan dragged that match deep enough to make the favorite sweat.

Morocco gave the bracket another penalty result. ESPN's event summary listed Netherlands 1, Morocco 1, then Morocco winning the shootout 3 to 2. The attached article headline said the Netherlands were knocked out after the penalty loss. Morocco also controlled most of the match by the box score, with 70.1 percent possession, 11 shots and 5 on target. The Netherlands had 29.9 percent possession, 6 shots and 2 on target. Between Paraguay and Morocco, the World Cup night carried two penalty exits for European sides and one late Brazil escape.

Baseball Filled The Board

MLB supplied the domestic volume with 13 finals. Chicago White Sox 8, Baltimore Orioles 2 opened the list. ESPN's recap credited Colson Montgomery with a go ahead double and Jacob Gonzalez with 3 RBIs. Pittsburgh Pirates 11, Philadelphia Phillies 7 had more late damage, with Esmerlyn Valdez, Jared Triolo and Endy Rodriguez homering. ESPN's recap said Pittsburgh escaped an early five run deficit and Rodriguez hit a three run homer in the ninth.

The rest of the MLB board stayed busy: Texas Rangers 6, Cleveland Guardians 3. Detroit Tigers 7, New York Yankees 3. Toronto Blue Jays 2, New York Mets 1. Boston Red Sox 6, Washington Nationals 3. Milwaukee Brewers 5, Cincinnati Reds 3. Chicago Cubs 3, San Diego Padres 2. Minnesota Twins 5, Houston Astros 4. Miami Marlins 10, Colorado Rockies 7. Seattle Mariners 6, Los Angeles Angels 2. Los Angeles Dodgers 9, Athletics 4. Arizona Diamondbacks 5, San Francisco Giants 4.

The Marlins line had the best baseball detail from ESPN's recaps: Griffin Conine hit a three run homer and Sandy Alcantara improved to 6 and 0 in June. Arizona's 5 to 4 win over San Francisco also came with useful context, as ESPN credited Geraldo Perdomo with a three run double and said the Diamondbacks stayed undefeated against the Giants this season.

Morning Ledger

The NBA scoreboard was empty, so ESPN's NBA feed moved through free agency. Kristaps Porzingis agreed to a 2 year, $40M deal with the Warriors. Jalen Duren was reported to be meeting with the Lakers and Kings. Kevin Huerter was reported back to Detroit on a 3 year, $27M deal.

The WNBA feed had A'ja Wilson listed as questionable for the Commissioner's Cup final and Mercury rookie Jovana Nogic out for the rest of the 2026 season. The NHL feed had Florida acquiring goaltender Akira Schmid from Vegas, Brendan Gallagher traded to Vancouver after 14 seasons in Montreal, and Buffalo re signing Beck Malenstyn for six years and $17.5M. The NFL feed reported the Lions released Terrion Arnold after armed robbery and kidnapping charges, while longtime NFL case judge David Doty died at 96.

My read: Paraguay belongs on top of the day because it combined elimination, penalty pressure and a statistical mismatch. Germany had the ball, the shots and the larger name. Paraguay had the keeper, the final kick and the next match. Monday's scores are clean on that point.
