Messi Hat Trick Drives Argentina Past Algeria

Argentina 3, Algeria 0 was the score that owned the morning. Argentina opened its World Cup title defense in Kansas City, and the ESPN event article said Lionel Messi equalled Miroslav Klose's World Cup scoring record with 16 goals. That is the lead: three Argentina goals, all from Messi, and three points to start the group.

The early scare belonged to Algeria. ESPN commentary logged a Fares Chaibi finish in the 8th minute, then a VAR no goal decision in the 9th. Messi changed the match eight minutes after that. He scored in the 17th minute with a left footed shot from outside the box to the top right corner, assisted by Rodrigo De Paul. In the 60th, he scored from the center of the box. In the 76th, he finished the hat trick with a left footed shot from the center of the box, assisted by Nico Gonzalez.

The final numbers explain why the result was so sharp. Argentina put 6 of 10 shots on target. Algeria had 1 shot on target from 7 total shots. Algeria held 52.2 percent possession to Argentina's 47.8, according to the ESPN summary, which only makes the score look harsher. Algeria had more of the ball. Argentina had the player who ended possessions.

France gave the World Cup card another heavyweight result. France 3, Senegal 1 came after a scoreless first half. Kylian Mbappe scored in the 66th minute, Bradley Barcola scored in the 82nd, Ibrahim Mbaye answered for Senegal at 90 plus 5, and Mbappe scored again one minute later. ESPN's game article caption said Mbappe equalled Olivier Giroud's France goal scoring record. France also had 8 shots on target from 11 total shots, while Senegal put 2 of 6 on target.

Norway's opener was louder on the scoreboard. Norway 4, Iraq 1 arrived with ESPN's article describing Erling Haaland's two goals as his first World Cup goals. Haaland scored in the 29th and 43rd minutes. Aymen Hussein headed Iraq level in the 39th, Leo Ostigard headed in Norway's third in the 76th, and an Aymen Hussein own goal finished the scoring at 90 plus 6. Norway and France both left the day with three points, the same group table fact Argentina banked in Kansas City.

The WNBA had one final on ESPN's board, Indiana Fever 113, Toronto Tempo 91. ESPN's WNBA news feed credited Kelsey Mitchell with 27 points and Caitlin Clark with 21 points and 14 assists. A separate ESPN headline said Brittney Sykes exited Toronto's loss with a foot injury. The basketball takeaway is plain: Indiana got both shot making and table setting in the same game, while Toronto left the night with a loss and an injury item attached to the headline.

MLB supplied volume. ESPN listed 15 baseball events for the night, with San Francisco Giants at Atlanta Braves suspended while the Giants led 3 to 2. The loudest completed score was New York Yankees 12, Chicago White Sox 2. Minnesota Twins 12, Texas Rangers 2 matched that 10 run margin. Los Angeles Dodgers 1, Tampa Bay Rays 0 was the smallest final. The Phillies beat the Marlins 8 to 2, the Blue Jays beat the Red Sox 6 to 1, the Reds beat the Mets 5 to 3, the Brewers beat the Guardians 2 to 1, and the Cardinals beat the Padres 3 to 2.

The best MLB box detail came from Los Angeles Angels 7, Arizona Diamondbacks 0. ESPN's summary had Reid Detmers throwing 7 scoreless innings with 3 hits allowed, 0 walks and 3 strikeouts. Mike Trout went 2 for 5 with 3 RBI and 1 home run. Zach Neto went 2 for 5 with 1 home run. That is enough to make the Angels win more than a score in a long June list: clean starting pitching, two homers near the top of the order, and a shutout against an Arizona lineup that reached only 4 hits.

The morning belongs to Messi because one match delivered both the nightly result and the historical hook. MLB gave the board density, Indiana gave the WNBA a clean one game result, and France and Norway made the World Cup card feel heavy. Argentina supplied the headline that survives the scroll.
