Carolina pulls the Stanley Cup Final even

Carolina took the cleanest prize on the Tuesday night board: Hurricanes 5, Golden Knights 3. ESPN's NHL scoreboard listed the game as Stanley Cup Final Game 4, and ESPN's recap reported that the result left the series even at two games apiece.

The game opened fast enough to make the rest of the night feel like damage control for Vegas. Logan Stankoven scored at 1:06 of the first period. Jackson Blake made it 2 to 0 at 3:28. Mark Stone answered at 7:22, then Jordan Staal restored Carolina's two goal edge at 12:48. Vegas climbed back through William Karlsson at 4:22 of the second and Brett Howden at 17:08, which sent the game to the third period tied at 3.

Staal broke it at 6:32 of the third. The ESPN play feed credited the goal as a backhand with Nikolaj Ehlers on the assist. Ehlers then closed the scoring at 19:05. The box score matched the scoreline better than the comeback attempt: Carolina had 28 shots to Vegas 21, won 29 faceoffs to 22, and went 1 for 3 on the power play. Vegas went 0 for 3 with the extra skater.

The takeaway is simple: Carolina left Game 4 with the series tied and with its captain at the center of the swing. Staal's second goal is the clip, but the bigger number is Carolina's two third period goals after Vegas spent the second period chasing.

Baseball gave the board depth

ESPN's MLB scoreboard returned 15 finals for June 9. The Yankees beat Cleveland 3 to 2, and ESPN's MLB news feed credited Jazz Chisholm Jr. with the eighth inning homer that decided it. Seattle beat Baltimore 6 to 5 in 10 innings. Cincinnati beat San Diego 5 to 3 in 11. The White Sox beat Atlanta 6 to 5 in 10. The Dodgers beat Pittsburgh 12 to 3. St. Louis blanked the Mets 7 to 0.

Two individual lines stood out in the same scoreboard feed. Detroit beat Minnesota 10 to 4 with Dillon Dingler listed at 4 for 5 with two home runs, a double, four RBI, and three runs. Kansas City beat Texas 5 to 3 with Jac Caglianone listed at 3 for 3 with two home runs, three RBI, two runs, a walk, and a steal. Those are the kind of box score lines that make a long regular season night worth reading past the finals.

WNBA Cup games had clean winners

The WNBA Commissioner's Cup board had three finals. Atlanta beat Chicago 82 to 75 at Wintrust Arena. Minnesota beat Dallas 100 to 76 at Target Center. Golden State beat Phoenix 87 to 81 at Chase Center.

ESPN's WNBA feed put Angel Reese at 17 points and 17 rebounds in Atlanta's win over Chicago, Veronica Burton at 25 points and 8 assists in Golden State's win over Phoenix, and Olivia Miles at 24 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 assists in Minnesota's win over Dallas. That gives the night a useful split: the Dream got the return game headline, the Lynx got the widest margin, and the Valkyries got the late window win.

Morning headlines

NBA had no June 9 game in the ESPN scoreboard I pulled, so the feed was Finals housekeeping. ESPN's NBA news listed Knicks and Spurs uniform schedules, reported that Victor Wembanyama avoided a flagrant foul for shoving Jalen Brunson, and carried New York's push to get Towns more late touches after the Game 3 loss to San Antonio.

NFL was practice and legal news. ESPN's NFL feed led with minicamp updates, including Colts caution around Daniel Jones, more Brandon Aiyuk comments aimed at San Francisco, and a report accusing five law firms of defrauding the NFL concussion settlement fund of more than 87 million dollars.

Soccer entered through ESPN's FIFA World Cup API feed. The current item there said Lionel Messi came off the bench and scored for Argentina against Iceland after 16 days out with left hamstring muscle overload. With the World Cup window opening, that item belongs in the roundup.
