Rivero lifts Angels over Dodgers on quiet finals night

Rivero owns the Los Angeles box score

Sebastin Rivero gave the Angels the cleanest headline from Sunday: Los Angeles Angels 13, Los Angeles Dodgers 5. ESPN's game summary says the backup catcher went 5 for 5 with six RBI, and the bottom four spots in the Angels order went 13 for 15. That is how a lineup turns a city series finale into a box score that looks absurd in print.

The Angels needed the ending as much as the margin. ESPN's recap says the win let them avoid a season sweep. The Dodgers had the home line in the scoreboard, but the Angels owned the production columns where the game was decided: Rivero, the bottom four bats, and enough traffic to make five Dodgers runs feel secondary.

MLB had depth behind the lead

New York Yankees 6, Boston Red Sox 1 came with its own late swing. ESPN's summary says Cody Bellinger's tiebreaking homer sparked a five run eighth inning, and Jazz Chisholm Jr.'s three run drive capped it. That is a rivalry game turning in one inning, with New York leaving Boston no soft landing after the tie broke.

Texas Rangers 10, Cleveland Guardians 0 supplied the cleanest pitching line. ESPN's recap says Jacob deGrom allowed three singles over six innings, Texas hit four homers, and the Rangers collected three consecutive series wins for the first time this season. That is more than a shutout. It is a rotation headline and a club form headline in the same result.

The rest of the MLB board had enough shape to matter. Philadelphia Phillies 9, Chicago White Sox 5 included Brandon Marsh homering for the third straight day and driving in two runs, with Rafael Marchn also going deep. Toronto Blue Jays 6, Baltimore Orioles 4 kept Toronto moving at home. Atlanta Braves 3, Pittsburgh Pirates 2 was the tightest win among the early East games. San Francisco Giants 2, Chicago Cubs 1 closed as a one run road win. Kansas City Royals 6, Minnesota Twins 5 added another narrow finish.

WNBA winners separated early from the pack

Los Angeles Sparks 89, Portland Fire 72 was the stronger WNBA box score. ESPN's recap credits Nneka Ogwumike with 20 points and a season best 17 rebounds, while Dearica Hamby added 22 points and 12 rebounds. The same recap says the Sparks snapped a three game losing streak, which gives that result a cleaner read than a routine June win.

Toronto Tempo 85, Chicago Sky 68 completed the Commissioner's Cup part of the night. ESPN's recap says Brittney Sykes scored 25 points and Nyara Sabally added 15. The scoreboard listed Toronto at 6 wins and 5 losses after the game, and Chicago at 4 wins and 7 losses.

Finals leagues moved through headlines

The NBA and NHL scoreboards were idle for June 7, so the morning context moved to the feeds. ESPN's NBA feed has Knicks and Spurs coverage pointed toward Games 3 and 4 in New York, including a Wembanyama item about invitations around the city and a schedule item for the Finals on ABC. Another ESPN item from Sunday noted Madison Square Garden's first NBA Finals game since June 25, 1999. That is the league's loudest current setting: the Finals moving back into the Garden.

The NHL feed has Vegas carrying a two games to one series lead into Game 4 against Carolina. ESPN also reported that Brayden McNabb played Game 3 with at least two dozen stitches in his face and wore a caged helmet. That is the hard edge of the Cup Final off day: Vegas has the lead, and one of the player stories is a defenseman playing through visible damage.

The NFL feed is in minicamp mode. ESPN lists offseason workout dates for all 32 teams, with mandatory minicamps starting in June, and has a separate minicamp story centered on rookies, quarterbacks and team questions. The soccer feed remains World Cup centered, with ESPN carrying a U.S. planning item and a list story saying over 40 MLS players were called up for the 2026 World Cup.

The morning read

Sunday belonged to Rivero first, then to the volume of MLB results behind him. DeGrom gave the board its best pitching line, the Yankees delivered the biggest late inning in the rivalry slot, and the WNBA produced two double digit margins. The Finals leagues owned the conversation through their next dates, but the previous night's real scoreboard story came from an Angels catcher who turned the bottom of the order into the top of the roundup.
